High school students from the Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) will debate two contrasting policy proposals about the relationship between law enforcement and the community. The debaters are skilled at presenting multiple facets of complex issues and will provide a 360-degree perspective on the needs of law enforcement and the community. Panelists from law enforcement, social services, education, and community organizations will then respond to the proposals and engage in a robust discussion about how all stakeholders can collaborate to make positive change in our community. --- The debaters from BAUDL have been featured on NPR, in the San Francisco Chronicle and in the Oakland Tribune. The youth dedicate countless hours at evening practices and weekend tournaments, honing their skills of research, advocacy, and the balanced analysis of complex policy issues. They are thoughtful local youth who are grounded in their communities and will inspire you with their intelligence and passion. Saturday, September 29 2012, 10 AM - 1 PM Fruitvale Elementary School 3200 Boston Avenue, Oakland, CA 94602 Now in its seventh year, the Ready to Learn Fun Fair has been a highly valued resource for hundreds of families across Alameda County. The goal of the fair is to promote education at an early age and encourage healthy lifestyles by showcasing community and local government resources for families and children. The Ready to Learn Fun Fair will provide families with information about community, County and State resources that are available to them. In additional to musical performances and a clown show, the popular television character Clifford the Big Red Dog will be in attendance to promote reading as a fun activity. Entrance to the fair is FREE and all children that attend will receive a complimentary book. Participants include youth from the Alternatives in Action Culture Keepers, a cascading mentorship program that pairs student leaders from McClymonds High School with youth from Hoover Elementary School who are experiencing personal, academic, and behavioral difficulties. Youth from the Alameda County Probation Department Weekend Training Academy (WETA) have also been researching their genealogy and will take part in the program. The student leaders? goal for the event is to educate West Oakland youth about the importance of knowing their family and community history and empower them with the tools and resources to research their own past.

African American Caregiving and Wellness Forum on Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiver Resources This program is put on by the Alzheimer's Association in partnership with the Alameda County Area Agency on Aging, UC Davis Alzheimer?s Disease Center, West Oakland Senior Center and Supervisor Keith Carson. WHAT: The Alzheimer's Association is offering a caregiving and wellness conference to help the community learn more about Alzheimer?s disease and how it is disproportionally affecting the African American community. According to Alzheimer's Association Outreach Specialist Craig Wingate, ?This conference will help our community understand risk factors for Alzheimer's, provide practical caregiving tips and offer individuals the opportunity to get help and support.? In addition to offering caregiver advice and support, experts will discuss Alzheimer's disease basics and explain the correlation between Alzheimer?s andother diseases prevalent in the African American community, including diabetes and heart disease. Attendees will learn how to adopt a healthier lifestyle to lower their likelihood of getting Alzheimer?s and other related diseases. WHY: · Today, 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. By 2050, as many as 16 million Americans will have the disease. · There are more than 15 million individuals (1.5 million in CA) providing unpaid care for loved ones with Alzheimer's and other dementias · Many caregivers experience high levels of stress and negative effects on their health, employment, income and financial security · African Americans are 2 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's in comparison to other populations. · Diabetes and heart disease are both prominent in the African American community and increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
